A Short Story - Quality Time With Montu And Sheenu

A Short Story - Quality Time With Montu And Sheenu

Prime minister has announced 21 days complete lock down in the country to restrict Corona. Suresh is worried about his children, who will not go to school those days. He himself is at home, can't go to work. He worried about his earnings, feeling stressed and overwhelmed. He narrated his problems to his wife, who is a teacher in a government school. His wife said, "Don't worry too much. School shutdown is a chance to make better relationships with our children. Our personal time is free to do fun. This is an opportunity for us. Now it is a chance to make our children feel loved and secured, and show them they are important." "You are right dear, but how?" asked Suresh. The wife said, "It's simple. Set aside time to spend with each child. It can be for just 20 minutes, or longer – it’s up to us. It can be at the same time each day so our children or teenagers can look forward to it." Suresh said, "Oh! You are right. I'll start from today itself."

Suresh went to his son Montu and keeping a physical distance with the son he asked Montu, "How are you feeling?" Montu replied, "Papa, I am feeling bored. How I will pass my time these days? I want to play." Montu is a student of eight class, good in mathematics, so he asked his son to bring a newspaper. Montu brought the newspaper immediately. Suresh opened a page that has Sudoku. He asked Montu, "Solve this mental game. Can you do it?" Montu looked at him and said, "I don't know Sudoku. What is this?" Suresh explained the rules of Sudoku to his son and then Montu took interest in the game. Montu solved the puzzle, but it took some time. Suresh congratulated Montu for solving the puzzle. After spending some quality time with Montu, Suresh went to his daughter Sheenu, who was playing with her dolls alone. Sheenu looked at him and asked, "Papa! Any work?" Suresh replied to Sheenu, "Yes, I also want to play with your dolls. Can I play with you?" "Yes, Papa, you can play, but you have to keep a distance. Please sit there and I am giving you a doll." Suresh was happy to know that his daughter understand the present situation, although she is a student of class three. Suresh spent about half an hour with Sheenu. Sheenu was happy because her father played with her dolls.

After spending the time with children, Suresh went to the kitchen. His wife was busy in cooking. He helped his wife and told about his activities he did with the children. His wife was happy. She said, "Good. This is a time when we can build confidence in our children. If our children want to do something that's not OK with physical distancing, then this is a chance to talk with them about this." "Yes, you are right," said Suresh. His wife suggested to Suresh, "You should talk about something with Montu likes: sports, music, celebrities, friends. With Sheenu, you should read a book or look at pictures, make drawings, dance to music or sing song, help her in studies." "Yes, you are right," said Suresh again and his wife is happy that her husband too has started spending quality time with children.
